Teaching Method - Lecture Method

Lecture Method is the one of the oldest and overused teaching method. It is a procedure for explaining and clarifying a major concepts, ideas, theories, principles and laws. It makes use of exposition which may be a narration of descriptions. Owing to availability of teacher’s time in lesson’s preparation and working load, this method become the solution of teacher in the deliberation of day to day lessons.

These are some situation where the teacher forced to use the Lecture Method.

1. When the teacher can give effective information in 1 hour of lecture – demonstration what may be taken up by the class in 2 or 3 hours of laboratory work to reinforce learning. Science, Mathematics and Computer Education normally used these procedures.

2. When the availability of resource information is hard for the class to obtain.

3. When the topic is new and the teacher wants to show the birds eye view of the various works to come. It is always better for the student to expect the outcome and see the relevance of it so they will motivated throughout the unit.
4. When the generalization, conclusion or summary are needed for the closing of chapter or units

Factors: The teacher’s personality weighs great deals in the effectiveness of the lecture method. Good voice, pronunciation, enunciation, proper facial expression, gestures and manners are some factors affective the success of this method. Comprehension and appreciation of the topics is the measure of success of the lecture.

Strength:
The lecture may serve as a very effective means of arousing appreciation. This is the method in which teacher could discover the student INTEREST which is guide for future career. A good teacher has to make record of unusual responses, questions and reaction from listener. This is a good indication of student inclination in the career appropriate for them.

Weakness:
The greatest valuation of this method is the violation of the famous learning by doing by John Dewey. The lecture may also be ineffective once it is overuse by the public or private teacher. In a part of the student or pupils, some may not know how to distinguish the important concepts from supporting ideas. Some listener are not good listener while they may not be able to analyze, summarize and create own conclusion based on the topic.

Why teacher should go for postgraduate studies?

Postgraduate students and programs are administered by several different areas. In the Philippines, graduate school program will enable students to take part in their studies from master’s degree to doctorate degree. The postgraduate coursework students is administered and run by the dean in the graduate school. For instance, a doctoral degree is by nature and tradition the highest certificate of membership in the academic community. As such, it is meant to indicate the presence of superior qualities of mind and intellectual interests of high attainments in a chosen field. It is not conferred merely as a certificate to a prescribed course of study and research, no matter how long or how faithfully pursued. All requirements and regulations leading to a doctoral degree are devices whereby a student may demonstrate present capacities and future promise for scholarly work.

Why should one go for postgraduate studies? What is the advantage in studying the graduate school? All of these questions can be answered by degrees based on the intensity and level of impressionability on the part of the inquisitors. A person must enroll in the graduate school for the reason that he or she better job opportunity and faster promotion with high salary given to a graduate in doctorate degree. Aside from this, one must go to graduate school because it helps him/her in professional growth and development.

There are a lot of advantages for those students enrolled in the graduate school. Some of these advantages are:

  1. Advanced studies with theories from popular philosophers in the field of Doctor of Philosophy and renowned educationalists in the field of Doctor of Education;
  2. Being a doctor is well-respected in terms of educational attainment and it gives one a high regard or reputation in the community;
  3. Authorship is the top priority in fulfilling the task to compose any original article about the theories to be published in a book or any dissertation for self-growth and promotion;
  4. The right and privilege to propagate new terms that are indispensable in the society and are standardized and approved worldwide by the people, especially the educators concerned about the welfare of individuals;
  5. The power to speak out in public and to be given freedom to speak based on the theories he or she has mastered in.

Congratulation Batch 2009

This is an opportunity to me to congratulate the graduates of school year 2008-2009 specially the high school graduates that will enter in college this opening.

I am going to suggest some courses that helpful to the HS students as they are now doubts on what career they should proceed. Most of the public school do not have guidance counselor and if they do, this counselor do not have enough information in the industry except the teaching professions.

Some Deped teachers are also guilty of not providing enough information regarding appropriate career for their students. Career advises is very important specially in the public school graduates since most of them are still under maturity and received incomplete education from their high school.

Giving tips to student about the career suited to them is very easy if the teachers are observant in their abilities and interest. The grades and projects will confirm the relationship between student’s interest and future career.

1. If the student gets the grade of 83% or up. With recognition of the training they receive from highly populated public school, I strongly recommend these students to get Engineering and/or Accountancy if they have basic comprehension on English. Other course that is highly relevant today is Information Technology. The grades in mathematics plus the student ability to instructions and their project performance is the best indicator that they are qualified to become Programmer and Network Engineer in the future.

2. If the students have 80% and up scores and satisfying creativity in arts. I strongly suggest taking fine arts, drafting or any arts related courses. These are the future web and graphics artist.

3. If the students are good in language and capable of creating stories I strongly recommend Mass Communication, Literature or any language related course including Marketing. This will become future "content writers" or "copy writer" which is in demand today due to Internet technology. They will become future online marketing writer for BPO companies.

4. For those who love traditional sciences, they can proceed with medical courses but please take note of this reminder. There are many jobless nursing graduates today so tell them to avoid statistics. Competitions are high and it might not give good result in the future. If your students are good in science, let them take Medical Technologies and become Scientist.

6. If the parents of the student have business. Please encourage them to get business courses. I know some retired professionals who can not enter business for they do not have knowledge or skills on entrepreneurship.
