Winners of the 3rd National English Jazz Chants Festival 2010

Winners of the 3rd National English Jazz Chants Festival 2010 for elementary pupils or high school students adn their teachers was held last Feb 15-17 at Tagum City Trade Center and Cultural Pavillon.

There are 11 regional winners that participated in the elementary and seven regional winners in the secondary.

The following are the 3 national winners for high school;

Each winnng team received P10,000 while each of the grand champions received P20000 from National Council for Childrens Television. The winning coaches are entitled to a 3day trip to Thailand for free in July 2010.

Tha National English Jazz Chants Festival was held as part of the evaluation of the 2009 Convergys-NCCT Multimedia Training in Oral English for Secondary and Elementary.

Australian Scholarship Program

The Australian Goverment announces the offering of the Australian Leadership Awards Scholarships for studies which will commence in 2010.

The ALA Scholarship are open to high acheivers with potential to influence social and economic policy reforms and development outcomes, both in their own countries and in the Asia Pacific.

The ALA's are open to fields of study which related to priority areas such as disability, economic growth, education, environment, food security, gender, goernance, health, human rights, infracture, regional stability, rural deelopment and water sanitation.

The applications for ALA scholarships have opened on March 10, 2010 and the deadline is June 30.

2010 National Conference for Science Educators

The Science Club Advisers Association of the Philippines in cooperation with the Department of Education Center for Students and Co curricular Affairs, Department of Science and Technology Science Education Institute and ABS CBN DZMM will conduct the 2010 National Conference for Science Educators on Apr. 23-27, 2010 at the Almont Inland Resort, Butuan City.

With the theme "Science Research Towards Dev elopement", the conference aims to provide opportunities for the participants to:

a. share new trends and best practices in science research;
b. discuss various programs and projects related to research and development
c. share science teaching strategies that promote maximum potential among youth.
d. develop programs and projects for science research and
e. strengthen partnership among science stakeholders on the institutionalization of science research nationwide.

Activities include plenary sessions, group dynamics, project studies, presentation and workshops.

Guidelines on 2010 Graduation Rites

Pursuant to the Constitutional and statutory mandate that public elementary and secondary education shall be free, and in line with the directive of the President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo to remind schools that graduation rites shall be lean on cost but long on the imparting of valuable messages; that graduation rites shall not be exercises in splurging and display of pomp and pageantry but should be Spartan affairs that exhort civic duties, sense of community and personal responsibilities; and that graduation rites can be memorable, exciting and animated without the baggage of extra cost and excessive spending, you are hereby reminded and directed of the following:

1.  Public school heads, teachers and other school personnel shall not be allowed to collect any kind of contribution for graduation rites.

2.  Graduation exercises shall be held in school premises in the most austere manner.  No extravagant special attires/togas shall be required.

3.  Annual yearbook should be discouraged and be considered non-obligatory.

4.  The graduation rites shall be conducted in an appropriate solemn ceremony, befitting the graduating students and their parents and shall not in any way be used as a venue for any political activity.

The Deped order supersedes all previous Deped orders on graduation rites which may be inconsistent with this Order.

Immediate dissemination of and strict compliance with this Order is directed.

Basic Education Research Fund

 1. Deped maintains the Basic Education Fund (BERF) that is intended to finance the conduct of education-related researches/studies.  For SY 2010-2011, the use of the BERF shall concentrate on areas/topics for research to wit:

deped fund
a. Increasing participation rate by reaching the unreached children/learners
b. Impact of pre-schooling on increasing survival rates in lower elementary grades
c. Impact of feeding programs on pupil learning/achievement
d. Raising the proficiency level of children already in school
e. Increasing local government spending in basic education
f. Cost Effectiveness of education service purchasing
g. Improving Deped's internal efficiency through the development of new and or improvement of existing systems and procedures for implementing Deped programs and projects and other operations
h. Modernization of Deped operations

Research proponents may either narrow down the specific areas to be researched on, or may recommend other possible areas, subject to Deped's approval.

2. Bureaus and Centers of the Central Office can avail of this research fund by submitting a research proposal following the prescribed format shown in Attachment 1.

3. Institutions outside Deped may also apply. For this purpose, the following criteria shall be considered in the evaluation of a non-Deped-developed research proposal:
a. Qualification of the Service Provider (50%)
b. Quality of the Proposal (30%); and
c. Cost of Proposal (20%).

4. A research grant of Php500,000.00 shall be made available for each Deped Regional Office and one Division Office per region to enable them to use research as a tool for making local policies and decisions.  The utilization of the research grant shall be subject to the prior approval by the Deped Central Office of their official request for the grant, duly supported by a research proposal which shall be within Deped's thrust and policies described in item 1 hereof and in accordance with the attached format.  The Deped research grant shall be in the form of fund transfer to the Regional and concerned Division Offices.  However, these offices are required to submit a full report after the research/study has been undertaken.  Part of the report shall be the official copy of a proposed Deped order or memorandum addressing certain policy relevant gaps applicable nationwide or obtaining in a specific region as a result of the findings and recommendations in the study.

5. The invitation to undertake research in basic education is extended to Deped and non-Deped offices/researchers.  However, the submission and evaluation of proposals from private institutions shall be subject to the provisions of RA9184 (Government Procurement Reform Act)

6. The research must be completed within one year.

7. Deadline for the submission of the request for a research grant and research proposal from the field offices is April 30, 2010.

8. The Office of the Director for Planning Service shall coordinate and supervise the utilization of the Basic Education Research Fund.

9. A Technical Evaluation Committee shall be organized to evaluate the research proposals submitted by different offices.

10. Immediate dissemination of this Order is desired.

Democracy Camp 2010

The University of Asia and the Pacific-Institute of political Economy and the Philippine Center for Civic Education and Democracy will hold the 2nd Democracy Camp Philippines - High School at the Las Brisas Resort, Antipolo City on April 5 - 8, 2010.

Democracy Camp Philippines is a program for high school youth leaders, designed to deliver in-depth and immersive training in the critical knowledge, attitudes, and skills necessary for effective citizenship and leadership in a democracy. Discussions will be interspersed with practical and real world skills training. The core objective of education in and for democracy for the youth leaders will be achieved through the following activities:

1.Lecture-discussions: The lecture-discussions feature experts and personalities who will provide insights into the deeper issues facing Philippine democracy. The topics to be tackled include the evolving Filipino identity and nationalism, democracy and constitutional liberalism, economic citizenship, and the need for civic culture.

2. Practical workshops: These workshops will provide the participants with practical life skills that they will need int he context of their responsibilities:

-Public Policy
-Consensus-building and Conflict Management and
-Project Management.

3. Solidarity sessions: These will be interactive sessions for participants to get to know each other and encourage dialogue. There will be an outdoor team-building session, a film showing, and a bonfire.

5th National Science Educators Convention

4th National Robotics Technology Exposition - Robotex 2010

The college of Computer Studies of the Our Lady of Lourdes College Foundation will hold the 4th National Robotics Technology Exposition on July 30, 2010 at the Our Lady of Lourdes College Foundation, Daet, Camarines Norte.

The objective of the ac activity is to promote the develop researches in the field or robotics. This will feature special lectures by prominent researchers and educators.

The student from elementary, secondary and collegiate levels are invited to attend. A registration fee of P100 will be charged for each student and 200 each for faculty for every 50 participants.
