(25 October) -- High school students in public schools will soon follow a new secondary education curriculum.
Department of Education regional supervisor Lorenzo Mendoza announced in yesterday's (Oct. 24) Kapihan sa PIA media forum, the possibility of implementing a new curriculum by 2010.
However, the implementation may still be delayed if the materials for the new curriculum are not yet out of the printing press.
Amendments in the Revised Basic Education Curriculum (RBEC) would include the assessment or learning outcome to take place before or in between the presentation of the lesson.
"Unlike in RBEC, the proposed new curriculum will require teachers to insert the assessment stage before, in between, and after the lesson," he said.
This way, the teacher would really have a clear picture of the student's learning level or absorptive capacity. Teachers would then not leave a particular lesson if the student did not fully comprehend or achieve the learning objectives.
Assessment strategies may be in the form of quizzes, role playing, dramatization, games, or comprehensive examination.
Lorenzo bared that the regional office is yet to receive the details of the proposed curriculum.
"It has already been practiced in some schools for pilot testing. As soon as we receive the guidelines, some teachers would then undergo trainings for the new curriculum," he said.
Dr. Alicia Sayson, Vice President of Academic Affairs in the University of Immaculate Conception said that RBEC has failed because not all teachers were properly trained to carry out the curriculum.

Hi, I am wondering if you can email me copies of the new high school curriculum along with the BECs? Currently doing research on Philippine Public School Education, and getting a grip on the new materials will help out a lot.
Thanks,

Hi!
What about the currently adopted curriculum? What does a new curriculum for 2010 means concerning the RBEC?
I am currently on my undergrad thesis and details on RBEC are needed. It would really be a big help if you please send me materials about this recent curriculum.
Big thanks,

new curriculum still under testing
We sometimes adopt curriculum from other countries that i think would not always work in the Philippines. It is obvious that we,Filipinos-are always just copying the things from abroad;i believe we can design a better curriculum based on Philippine settings.I'm a classroom teacher.New curriculum is not the answer for all problems in the educational system. We need trained teachers, dedicated, committed teachers in the work force and of course honest and competent administrators.
I admire your idealism. How many years are you in service?
I've been in the service for 17 years and i've been through a lot of curricula (secondary). The love for the profession is more worthy than changing the curriculum.A teacher must have passion on this work.Only then, change can be realized

I beg to differ.. in Singapore, all public schools are provided with content standards, topics as part of their national curriculum.
All the resources needed to teach the curriculum are provided with book lists and online content resources (Quizzes, Notes, Exercises, Videos)
An average teacher in Singapore can instruct better than an excellent teacher in the Philippines.
