The DepED through the BEE and BSE, announces the results of the 2013 National School Press Conference for School Year 2012-2013 held in April 8-12, 213 in Ormoc City, Region VIII. This culminating activity of the Campus Journalist Program is embodied in DepEd Memo No. 224 s. 2012 with the theme Campus Journalism: Championing Ethics in Social Media.

The Conference showcased the elementary pupils and secondary school students' journalistic competence. It was attended by 4,019 students, teacher-advisers, key officials of the regional and division offices, practitioners and academicians of prestigious organizations and learning institutions nationwide.

The Department acknowledge the support of the host region, DepEd Region VIII, the Schools Division of Ormoc City, its teachers and students, and the officials of the local government unites of Ormoc City who contributed to the success of the NSPC.

The results of the Individual Writing Contests in seven categories, Group contests, Script writing and Radio Broadcasting and Collaborative Publishing at the Elementary and Secondary Levels are contained in Enclosure Nos. 1 and 2 respectively.



 

Screening of the Film Watawat

The Galaxy Pictures / CineCilio Film Production announce the screening of the file WTATA - Flag during the 20096-1010 National School Press Conference in Tagum City, Davao del Norte on Feb. 22-26, 2010.

This is a 90 minute full length film produced by independent filmmaker with a historical storyline depicting the importance of the Philippine Flag as national symbol of the country's identity. This will be shown on Feb 23 at 8-am at Tagum City Atrium.

2010 National School Press Conference Host City is now Ready

Hosting NSPC: Tagum City is set to the national event

We make a stand, security measures will ot be taken lightly, says presiding officer Vice Mayor Rellon during the City's Peace and Order Council meeting on Jan 8 held at the Sangunian session hall of the 4th City Council.

Behind Tagum's repuration as a peaceful and child friendly city, the city government of Tagum regularly convenes the Peace and Order Council to coordinated closely with the participating agencies in assessing the City Security.

No doubt, the Asian Institute of Management declared Tagum as the 7 Most Competitive Medium Size Cities of the Philippines. As home of Festivals and City of Parks, the Department of Tourism has also declared Tagum as the Palm City of the Philippines and the Musical Capital of the South.

In preparation to the national event of National Schools Press Conference on February 22-26, the presence of DepED Tagum Division Superintendent Nenita Lumaad emphatically asks the AFP and PNP in making a security statement to ensure the public on the upcoming nationwide event.

Chief of Police PCI Giusseppe Gerald assures that Tagu is the safest place to live.  All the rest are safeguarded" he said. It can be recall the City Mayor of Tagu Rey Uy has established 5 police sub stations in strategic places in the entry and exit points of the City. The local government purchased two bomb sniffing dogs under the care of Tagum SWAT Team. CCTV Cameras have been installed all over the transport vicinity.

Army Captain Eddie Valde of 3rd Brigade also assured the Council that their Battalion has continuously monitored the areas for the student's guided tour in the eco-tourism park of Davao del Norte. All venues are 100% safe, he said.

Provincial Governor Rodolfo del Rosaio assured the DepED Committed that all participants in the coming National Student Press Conference are guaranteed safe in the province. After inspecting the testing centers and billeting quarters, the DepED technical working group has initially confirmed the hosting of Tagum City for the 2010 NSPC event.

Due to adverse effects of storms Ondoy and Pepeng on Campus Journalism Activities in Region I, II, III, IV-Calabarzon, IV MIMAROPA, V, Cordillera Administrative Region and NCR, the DepED is extending the submission of school paper entries for group contest at both the elementary and secondary levels from January 15, 2010 to January 22, 2010.

On the other hand, Palawan and Puerto Princesa City are not included in the extension.Please contact Ms. Josefina Mariano at 0922-6200843 for any inquiries.

The National School Press Conference is a national event where best student writers (news writer, article writer, feature writer, literature writer, essay writing, news paper design, editorial design, proofreading and more.)from each region are participating in national level. This is one of the best conference of the DepED where student gain not only experience in competing in national level but also meeting the best of the best in the country both private and public.

The Campus Journalism in the School

Campus Journalism is such an amazing program which was enacted into law a few years ago to encourage more participation, create funding and protect the campus advisers and writers from harassment or abuse of power to those who are in full authority.

The campus journalism act gives the options either to give constructive or creative comments to those persons in the higher office or the persons in the private learning institutions to be very careful and not to be abusive of their power and privileges. If there are limitations about the press freedom, the persons concerned ought to be very careful also and not to be very abusive in order to control from being attacked by the use of pen and paper. That’s why there is a campus paper in every school to let the public know about the projects and activities done by the school administrators, mentors, students and local community.

    This is a laudable endeavor of the Government officials. Because of this act, promising campus writers are trained and given exposure to hone their talents. School Press Conferences are held every year. Starting from the division level, it goes to the regional level and finally to the national level. Campus writers, who qualify to the regional level, have the chance to visit different places in the region and those who qualify to the national level have the opportunity to show case their talents and meet the best in news writing, feature writing, editorial writing as well as essay writing all over the country.

Campus Journalism Funds Diverted to another Program

 Press Conferences are held every year. Starting from the division level, it goes to the regional level and finally to the national level. Student's writer who qualify in every level will move one by one until their reach the prestigious national level. However, because of scarcity of funds, there are times when winning campus writers cannot compete with the winners in regional level, much more to the national level.

 The reason for this is that the schools depend on PTCA (Parent-Teacher-Community Association) funds’ participation in and out of town press conferences. Sometimes, these are curtailed because either funds are diverted to other purpose or there are no collections at all. It’s disheartening to know that a provision in the DepEd memorandum 203 dated June 5, 2006, stated with the regional trainings of advisers and campus journalists shall be subsidized by the Campus Journalism Funds (CJF). But based on our experience, our participation in the regional press conferences was never subsidized by the CJF. There was an instance when we did not participate in the regional press conference because we did not have funds for fare, registration and allowance for the contingent. It was really frustrating as we had seven winners in the division level.

    Even if the former DepEd Director Mordeno in the Philippines emphasized that school paper funds should be deposited in a bank with the principal, adviser and editor-in-chief as signatories, this was not so during our times where the majority of advisers principals and editor-in-chiefs were clamoring for the lack of funds. On the contrary, the PTCA collected and kept custody of all funds. They kept on ignoring the call and earnest request by the concerned persons to hand over the money to the in-charge of the publication.

    On behalf of the advisers and editor-in-chiefs of the publication, we wish other principals adhered to the directive of regional director and insisted that funds be intended for school paper and be given or entrusted to the school and not the PTCA.

2010 National Schools Press Conference (NSPC)

In line with the thrust to  promote responsible and free journalism pursuant to the provisions of Section 2 of RA 7079, this Department through the National Technical Working Groups from the BEE and BSE shall conduct the 2010 National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) on Feb 22-26, 2010 in Tagum City Davao Del Norte Region XI.


The conference theme "Campus Journalism as a Catalyst for Change: Achieving the MDGs by 2015 (Pampaaralang Pahayagan bilang Instrumento ng Pagbabago: Maisakatuparan ang MDGs ng 2015)" focuses on the 2015 Millennium Development Goals. Each region is advised to craft a regional theme aligned with the national theme.

The National Orientation Workshop on the Millennium Development Goals for the Regional Coordinators of Schools Press Conference shall be held on Spet 14-16, 2009 Marikina Hotel and Convention Center, Marikina City. Traveling expenses shall be charge to journalism funds.

RA7076 earmarks a subsidy of P2,500,000 pesos as payment of trophies, certificates, supplies and materials, honoraria, board and lodging of evaluators, duges and facilitators. Participants shall pay a registration fee of P4,000 to cover board and lodging, kits and other materials.  Expected participants of 2010 PressCon will be 3,604 while each region shall send 212 officials delegates.

Result of the Individual and group contests during the National School Press Conference (NSPC) Sy 2008 - 2009

The DepEd through BSE and BEE hereby announce the results of the National Press Conference for SY 2008 - 2009 held on Feb 14-21 in Naga City Region V. This year theme is Climate Change: A Call for Responsible Campus Journalism".

This DepED Activity brought about 4,500 campus journalists their school paper advisers, division and regional supervisors and staff in central office. The DepEd congratulate the winners and acknowledges the support of Region V DepEd officials, teachers, student and public local officials in the City of Naga Region V.

Regional Training of School Paper Advisers and Campus Journalists

The Department of Education (DepED) as mandated by RA no 7079 alson know as the Campus Journalist Act of 1991, through the BSE and BEE announces the conduct of the Regional Training of School Paper Advisers/Campus Journalists across the country between the 1st week of August and the last week of Sept inclusive.

The simultaneous training aims to develop the journalistic skills of new teacher advisers / campus journalists and further equipping the teacher advisers with the much needed skills in the field of journalism. The Region is advise to select 3 priority development areas that need upgrading based on the Regional standing or performance during the recent NATIONAL SCHOOLS PRESS CONFERENCE (NSPC)

The Regional Coordinator for Journalism, in coordination with the Regional School Paper Advisers Association shall n0minate the participants. There shall be a total of 32 participants for both the HS and Elem levels per division; 16 teachers advisers and 16 student journalists, 8 of whom shall come from the HS level and 8 from the elementary level with 4 English and 4 Filipino advisers and journalists respectively.

A subsidy of P16500 pesos is allotted per division and shall be drawn against the Campus Journalism Funds.
