Reading Contest for Grade Schooler

As a way of encouraging pupils to read and enjoy books, the Department of Education (DEPED) here conducted recently the Division Read a Thon Reading contest for grades III and VI with the theme "Ang Batang Palabasa Dalubhasa sa Kultura".

Gloria Buya-ao, Education Supervisor I here said participants from the 12 districts of the division were tested on comprehension, vocabulary, story retelling, and oral reading interpretation.

Buyao-ao disclosed that Grade III participants all come from low performing schools and one reason for their low performance may be their limited exposure to books. This so called academically challenged schools are Itab Elementary School, Manaot E/S; Batad E/S Patpat Primary Sschool annex; Banao E/S Bocos PS Annex; Chunak E/S; Mawanini PS, Nankatengey PS, Balligi ES Lawig ES.

Governor Teddy Baguilat Jr and Superintendent Estella Carino read stories to the kids before the contest. Carino said that there is fun and fulfillment in reading books to kids because by doing so you are imparting the skill in reading to the young people.

The 11 districts held their own District Read-A-Thon. All schools were also enjoined to observe Book Week with fitting activities which focused on the importance of books and libraries in the present educational system.

According to Buya-ao, some of the schools had their open house to invite parents and the members of the community to orient them as to what their children learn from the library while others conducted book exhibits and other displays to give impetus to the occasion and other related activities. Region 3 Intensify Campus Journalism Training Program

REGIONAL INTENSIVE TRAINING PROGRAM HELD FOR CAMPUS JOURNALISTS PDF Print E-mail

In preparation for the National Schools Press Conference (NSPC) on February 18-22, 2008 and to further hone their journalistic skills, eighty-four (84) campus journalists from the elementary and secondary levels were convened at the Regional Educational Learning Center (RELC) in Pulungbulu, Angeles City. The campus journalists are qualifiers in the 2008 individual writing contests to be held in Koronadal City, South Cotabato. They were joined by their Education Supervisors in charge of journalism both from English and Filipino and from both levels or the winning School Paper Advisers of the seventeen (17) schools divisions.

The Regional Director, the chiefs of both the elementary and secondary divisions and the other supervisors gave their moral support to the students when they visited the training venue.

Indeed, the region did not leave any stone unturned to boost the students’ morale. Without counting the cost, the region provided the best resources speakers to train the students. These speakers are both from the academe and media practitioners coming form reputable newspapers such as the Philippine Star, Times Journal, Philippine Daily Inquirer and others who could enhance the students’ journalistic competencies.

Material support included the outfit to be worn by the students and pupils, consisting of T-shirts, caps and jacket. Cash incentives were likewise, promised to would-be winners in the national level. The Director promised the students that a motorcade in the city would be held in their honor should they bring home the much-coveted trophies, certificates and medals for besting the campus journalists from other regions.
