National Science and Technology Fair for School Year 2013-2014

The Department of Education, through the Bureau of Secondary Education, announces the conduct of the National Science and Technology Fair for School Year 2013 - 2014 on December 3-6, 2013 at a venue to be announced later. The conduct of he school division and regional STF shall be held on the following dates;

Online registration and submission of school level entries  Aug 1-25 2013
Actual conduct of School level fair  Aug 29-31
Actual conduct of division level fair  sept. 12-14. 2013
Actual conduct of regional level fair  Oct 3-5,2013

STF aims to promote Science and Technology consciousness among the youth and to indentify the most creative,innovative and the best Science and Technology researchers who will represent the country in the Interl International Science and Engineering fair. The schools are encouraged to promote Science, Technology and Mathematics investigatory projects and will address environmental protection and conservation of the ecosystem.

The submission, evaluation and judging of research and projects for the school, division and regional STF shall be done online through website adddress: www.depednstf.com. See enclosure no 6 for furhter details on Scientific Review Committee r the Board of Judges.

4. The research plan and scientific research paper must follow and format specified on the ISEF Rules. The project proponents should review and download the 2014 ISEF rules and guidelines and all the required forms at http://www.societyforscience.org/page.aspx?pid=282. They should visit Interl ISEF Rules Wizad: http://apps.societyforscience.org/isef/students/wizard/index/asp for guidance in their planned projects. This tool will proide a list of forms that must be completed prior to the submission of the projects. In addition, all research projects from the school to the regional leel must undergo peer, teacher and expert evaluation.

5. The official participants from each region at the National Level DepED BSE Science and Technology Fair shall only be the Rank 1 Regional Winners in each of the differnnt categories, whose entries have been approved by the National Scientific Review Committee. The 4 individuals and the team project researches are represented by 4 project leaders, namely, 2 selected teachers advisers, one regional science fair coordinator, and regional math supervisor, The total number of official participants shal lbe 12 per region.


6. The travel expenses of the participants in the nationla level STF shall be charged to local funds or other soucers, whereas the expenses of DepED BSE staff board and lodging of officials participants, materials, transportation, relatove to these activities, prizes and honoraria of members of the SRCs, BOJs and external or non DepED resources persons shall be charged to the nationwide lump sum in support of RSHS subject to usual accounting and auditing.

ATENEO CHEMISTRY OLYMPIAD 2013

The Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) will conduct your Ateneo Chemistry Olympiad 2013 (AChO The year 2013) on January 26, 2013 at selected classrooms of this College in Quezon City. 

The particular Olympiad aims to: 

• Enable high school students with exemplary skills and skills in Chemistry to be able to come together in the nature of friendly competitors and sportsmanship; 
• Wake up greater interest in as well as promote the thanks of Chemistry amid students and teachers; and 
• Determine exemplary students and motivate them on the development of their expertise. 

The target participants to this activity are college students from National Money Region (NCR)  public and private supplementary schools wherein each and every school is represented by at the most two (2) squads, each comprised of merely three members. 

Attendance of both private and public schools shall be subject to the no-disruption-of classes policy as stipulated in DepEd Order No. 9, S. 2005 entitled Instituting Measures to Increase Involved Time-on-Task and Ensuring Conformity Therewith.

How to Teach Science Effectively

Getting kids serious about science at an early age is very important. It's easier than you think. Scientific disciplines does not have to be something mysterious. It is happening all around us all, and you can use everyday items to encourage your children's interest and knowledge.

Most parents believe that they are unable to help their children with science. But you don't need a superior scientific degree to teach young kids science. All you need is a readiness to try, to observe the world, also to take the time to encourage their natural curiosity. You can help a different option . positive attitude toward technology yourself. Then start just by asking your child doubts about the things you see every day. Exactly why do you think that happened? How does one think that works? And then pay attention to their answer without evaluating it or judging all of them. Listening without judging can improve their confidence, and make it easier to determine just what your child does or does not know.

You can turn every day activities in to science projects. For example, never just comment on how vibrant the moon is one nights. Ask questions about why it can be brighter tonight, why does the item change shape, etc. You will notice the moon's phases throughout a 30 days, and turn that activity to a science project, without also mentioning the words "science project". For a child that likes cooking, observe how milk curdles when you add apple cider vinegar, or how sugar melts into syrup. Try baking a new cake and asking each and every the cake rise? What happens should you forget to put in some compound? Voila! Instant science venture idea, without being intimidating to help you or your child.

Different kids have different interests to make sure they need different kinds of science projects. A rock collection may interest your young daughter your older son may will need something more involved. Fortunately, it is easy to find plenty of fun jobs. Knowing your child is the best strategy for finding enjoyable learning activities. Here are several more tips:

• Opt for activities that are the right degree of difficulty - not too simple nor too hard. If you are not sure, pick something less complicated since you don't want to discourage children by making science frustrating. It's possible to do the harder project down the road.
• Read the suggested age ranges on any projects, publications or toys labels, then again make sure that the activity is correct for your child, regardless of era. Your child's interest and abilities usually are unique. If a child considering a topic,they may be able to accomplish activities normally done by adolescent children, while a child who is not curious may need something less difficult aimed at a younger years. UTAH Scientist Creates Lesbian Worm

Through altering a brain's gene in a female worm, UTAH based scientists were able to change its sexual orientation so that it will be attracted to other females. Scientists activated the gene that makes male structures develop in the body.

The result was a female worm that act and think like boys. The study supports the idea that sexual orientation is the result of the brain’s wiring. They suggests that "sexual behavior is encoded in our genes.”

Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation no.28 declaring Sept as the National Science Club Month, the Science Club Advisers Association of the Philippines, the Department of Education Center for Students and Co-curricular Affairs and the Department of Science and Technology Science Education Institute announce the holding of the 2009 National Science Club Month Celebration for all science clubs in all elementary and secondary school nationwide.

The Theme "Adapting to Diverse Science Culture for Development". the celebration aims to achieve the following objectives:

• Strengthen the implementation of various programs and projects in science and technology.
• Provide opportunities for science clubs nationwide to engage into productive, meaningful and effective activities that promote awareness, interest and involvement of the youth in science and technology.
• Harness the knowledge, skills and values of science club leaders, teachers, coordinators and science enthusiasts to cope with and apply the developments and advancements in science and technology.
