The Department of Education will celebrate the Education Week nationwide the the theme Educakasyon: Tungo sa Tapat na Pagbabago at PagUnlad on Dec 6-10,2010

The aims to

a. reaffirm and emphasize the role of education in empowering and developing he young to become productive citizens of the country and responsive to the needs of the times;

b. strengthen cooperation among the stakeholders in education to support the necessary and significant changes to achieve quality and relevant education and

c. inspire every educator to do more for the children to ensure their future.

All schools are encourage to conduct simple and austere programs and activities consistent with the theme and objectives of this year's celebration during he week.

Expenses for this activities shall be charge to saving, local fund and cultural funds of the concerned office.

DepED Food Program

Some 85,000 grade one students in 271 public elementary faculties are the lucky beneficiaries of milk and biscuits because the country launches the Food for Progress Act Program in Pasig town yesterday, November 9.

Signed last November ten 2009, Food for Progress Act is an agreement signed between the u. s. of America and also thePhilippines that aims to supply fortified biscuit and chocolate milk for varsity kids in areas full of flooding caused by typhoons Ondoy and Pepeng last year. The typhoons that came in succession wrecked havoc in Metro Manila and in provinces in Central and Northern Luzon, leaving a combined injury of P1.4 billion in class property and equipment.

The Department of Agriculture (DA) was identified because the main entity accountable for the handling and distribution of all donated commodities. Meanwhile, Republic Flour Mills (RFM) Corporation committed to provide 5 million packs of UHT milk chocolate drink and 5 million packs of biscuits from the 680 metric heaps of non-fat dry milk as partner-processor beneath the project.

Training for 1st year Teachers of Technology and Livelihood Education

Training for 1st year Teachers of Technology and Livelihood Education, Music and Arts, Physical Education and Health and Edukasyon sa Pagpapahalaga on the 2010 Secondary Curriculum


The National Association of Secondary Schools of the Philippines and the Private Secondary School Administrators Association of the Philippines in coordination with the Bureau of Secondary Education - Department of Eduation will hold the training of 1st Year Teachers of TLE on the 2010 Secondary Education Curriculum which has adopeted the Understanding by Design as the framework in organizaing content, assessment and instruction around what is essential to teach and learn. The training shall be held on the ff dates and venues:

May 1-3, 2010 El Grande Hotel - Iloilo City
May 15-17, 2010 ECOTECH Center, Lahug Cebu City
May 29-31, 2019 Teachers Camp, Baguio City

The training aims to provide teachers better undestanding of the curriculum, its intended results, assessment and the design of the instructional plan.

DepEd RBEC - Does it Change Anything?

Year 2004 when this BEC curriculum  later RBEC was presented to teachers. We were instructed to implement RBEC with Makabayan subjects and other tool subjects. We were provided with lesson guides and other materials for the implementation.

When Roco left DepED and other officials take the seat, the DepEd improves the curriculum. We were instructed to follow teaching methods suited for the curriculum. Then in my years of teaching career, I find that the curriculum do not have big difference from the old one. The good thing now is that either I follow or not the RBEC curriculum, I have seen my students in the top of their present career.

What is the effect of RBEC in my teaching performance is I do not know. I do not if I could correlate it with the achievement of my students for I see no research and evaluation done in the part of DepED after this curriculum was implemented 5 years ago.

The government has not revised the curriculum for public elementary
schools in 13 years. Meanwhile, the curriculum for public high schools has not been changed for almost two decades, in sharp contrast to the general practice worldwide, which calls for a revision every 10 years.


That is why the RBEC, which is responsive to the ever-changing world, is badly needed, senior education department officials argued.

The Nestle Philippines makers of MILO will conduct the following sports events from July to December 2010.

Milo Champ Camp School Tour
The Milo Champ Camp Team will visit the schools identified by ActivAsia, Inc. in selected areas nationwide if permitted by the school administrators. The team shall invited students a week before the even. Likewise, the parents shall be also be invited to encourage their children to participate.

The pupils/students will be divided into 2 batches with a minimum of 450 pupils/students per batch. The 1st batch of the students will be ushered to the activity area where they will learn the basic skills of 3 worlds most popular sports: basketball, baseball and soccer from certified MILO coaches. After 15 minutes, the coaches will rotate so that all the children in each batch will get to experience all 3 sports. parents shall be given lectures on the benefits of getting children into sports as well as proper nutrition.

National MILO Marathon
The National MILO Marathon which was established in 1974 with 747 runners has now expanded, integrating the 3K, 5K, 0K and 21K to accommodate more student runners. For the past 2 years, it has registered more than 200,000 runners each year. Elimination races were eld in more than 25 key cities nationwide and 1 national finals in MM.

MILO Little Olympics
The Milo Litle Olympics is an inter school competition for elementary pupils and high school students, It is composed of 5 regional competitions. It had its first National Finals in 20096 in Cebu City where 1500 champion students and officials represented their respective schools and regions.

For this year, the Milo Little Olympics will hold the regional and national finals which will open in July and August in the areas of Cagayan de Oro City, Lngayen, Manila and Cebu.

P3000 Remaining Teacher's Bonus Ready for Release

The Department of Education is ready for the release of the remaining P3,000 Performance Enhancement Incentive (PEI) to the respective DepEd Regional offices, effective early next week.

“We are now in the process of effecting the transfer of funds to our regional offices for the payment of the remaining bonus,” Education Secretary Jesli Lapus explained. “We thank the Department of Budget and Management for the immediate release of the funds to us.”

DepEd Finance Team expects the bonuses to reach the teachers soon after. Meanwhile, all the regional offices were already instructed to prepare the necessary documents, such as payrolls and checks, for the immediate payment of the remaining P3,000.

“We stand firm in our commitment to our teaching and non-teaching personnel nationwide,” Lapus said. “That is to ensure that they receive their full benefits.” Earlier, DepEd reports it already paid the initial P7,000 bonus from the National Government.

The local City government of Bogo in Cebu recently agreed with DepED to provide house and lot package to some 100+ public teacher including non-teaching personnel through afforadable schemes under the pag-IBIG Fund.The agreement was signed after the ground breaking ceremonies of the Teachers Village in Bogo City. It was expected to finish in 6 to 7 months.

The DepED secretary was very thankful to the Bogo City government under the leadership of Mayor Celestino Martinez Jr. The local City government and DepED is working together in boasting teacher's moral by giving the opportunity to have their own house at affordable schemes. P400,000 is the estimate construction cost of socialize houses for teachers. It is payable for 30 years at 6% per annum.

Pursuant to Presidential Proclamation no.28 declaring Sept as the National Science Club Month, the Science Club Advisers Association of the Philippines, the Department of Education Center for Students and Co-curricular Affairs and the Department of Science and Technology Science Education Institute announce the holding of the 2009 National Science Club Month Celebration for all science clubs in all elementary and secondary school nationwide.

Cell Phone not allowed in during Classroom Discussion

DepEd Officials once again announced the prohibition of the use of cell phone inside the classroom to keep the students focused in the lesson and activities. The Officials cited DepEd Order Numbers 83, series of 2003; 26 series of 2000 and 70 series of 1999, which state that DepEd strictly imposes a ban on the use of cell phones by students during class hours.

Students are encouraged to turn off their cell phones during class period. In other way, students may live it open in the principal or guidance office to monitor emergency calls.

Teachers are also instructed not to confiscate the cell phone instead make sure to instruct the student switch off their gadgets prior to classroom discussion

What is Brigada Eskwela - It is National Schools Maintenance Week were teachers, students, parents and private agency joined together in the cleaning and repair of public classroom and its facilities.

From May 18 to 22, personnel of private sector companies can help public schools in
many ways. They can repair broken chairs and tables, repaint the walls, make the
schools green by planting, and other masonry works. They can also give non-cash
donations such as construction and cleaning materials.


DepED wanted to thank its partners from the private sector who have contributed to the success of Brigada Eskwela. “Without their assistance, the government could not have saved that much MOOE. DepED's Noodle's Contract is now Suspended

DepEd ordered the suspension and investigation by independent body, the feeding program particularly the purchased of more than P20 pesos worth of noodles from JEVERPS Manufacturing Corporation. The secretary mentioned that the independent body must be expert on nutrition, cost-estimation and distribution capabilities of the supplier.

The contract awarded to JEVERPS Corporation is P427 million pesos worth of ready to cook noodles. DepEd already purchased from this company last school year while continuation of the program in this school year leads to higher price of noodle pack. The pack noodle is now P22 per 100gm while the market value of the noodle with the same size is about P12 per pack.

Senator Mar Roxas who is campaigning for President this coming 2010 election exposed the alleged OVERPRICED noodles. Sen. Enrile do not believed that the noodle have malunggay ingredients, while Sen Mar Roxas wonder why the DepEd did not purchase from known company like NESTLE PHILIPPINES OR UNIVERSAL ROBINA CORPORATION. The senator said the Government will lost P100 million pesos in this anomalous deal continue. He also said that erring officials of the Department of Education are still liable even the contract is suspended.

The Department of Education (DepED ph) through the BSE and the regional offices in partnership with the Teacher Education Institutions TEIs and Center of Excellence COEs announces the offering of Term 2 of the summer Certificate Program for Secondary School Non Specialist Teachers in Filipino, AP, TLE, Music, PE, and Mapeh.

Certificate Program seeks to improve the capability of non-specialist teachers teaching any of the 4 aforementioned learning areas by providing knowledge of content and upgrade their competence in teaching and assessment for learning. Follow-through interventions at the division level are expected to be provided during the semestral break as part of the continuing capability building of teachers career.

The Certificate program is a 24units, 6 weeks course conducted in 2 summer. Term 1 began last April 14 2008 and ended on May 24 2008. Term 2 shall begin on April 13, 2009 and shall end on May 23 2009.

Selection of participants was under the duty of Regional Offices.

DepEd to Pilot Test Journalism Subject in HS and Elementary

The Special Program for Journalism at the Secondary Level shall be implemented on pilot basis in 17 public schools nationwide starting SY2009-2010.

In the preparation for the field test of the program, the Regional Directors are requested to submit on or before Marcdh 16, 2009 to the BSE their recommended pilot schools (1 per region) and the names of the teachers of the following subjects who will handle the journalism class.

Philippines Chambers of Commerce and Industry wants 2 more years in primary education

Two or a month ago, I write some reason why we should add more year level in our elementary and high school. Some teacher agree and some do not. I noticed that those disagree are teachers who are handling a selected student like those in science high school or science elementary.

One of the main reason i provide in my previous posting is about teacher and curriculum factor. The DepEd curriculum is integrated on too big for 1 school yar because they want to complete the subject matter in just a short period of time. This situation resulted to less mastery on topics on the part of the student. The second reasons is the teachers workload. Too many subjects to teach, extra non specialization workload, daily class record, daily log or lesson plan, class register and periodic grading. This situation resulted to unprepared teacher in classroom activity. So do not blame teachers for low quality education. They will not pass the board exam if they are not good. Do not blame the books for they are well explain. However, for sure, teacher will not be able to complete the content of the book which for me a must.

Now i read an article from business group (PCCI) that will support this idea. The business community is complaining about the mismatch of education to the need of industry (specially the growth of inbound call center which required knowledge and skills in international business) which the constitution required the government to provide relevant and functional education (I learn my integral and differential calculus but after more than 10 years of working I did not find any application at all).

The Philippine Chambers of Commerce and Industry or PCCI through its research group, Universal Access to Competitiveness and Trade know as UACT have proposed to the government for the additional academic years. The group think that it is the solution for the job-skills mismatch in the country. PCCI is proposing two more years of primary education and dedicate the latter senior years of High School to technical and practical training (skills development). They said this is the concussion they agreed based on the discussion between academe and business group.

The business group believes that with more years in primary education until 3rd year of HS, student will be able to obtain necessary theoretical knowledge on Values, Math, Science and English. The the remaining 2 years in high school, the students will focus in skills development like speaking language for call center industry, writing skills for outsourced content writing jobs which is scattered online. The later year of the student will be spent on handling industrial machine, actual business procedures like making PO's, quaotation, correspondence, selling products and more. In this situation, i will be able to teach graphics and web designing which is very in demand now a days. This skills do not need diploma and degree. Its creativity and necessary tools are the requisite and we can produce a self earning student who are about to enter college.

The business group said there are a lot of job vacancy because of the absense of required skills to get hired by these companies. I do very much agree with this. I know some people are working online with 3 or 4 more different foreign employers. The business group also want participation in the development of the curriculum by allowing the leader industry to become part of curriculum developer for TESDA, DepED and CHED. This is the problem of the 3 government agency, they are seldom or not at all ask the private industry about the curriculum The truth is, the DepEd itself do not listen to the private sectors because these curriculum writers have PhD and they think they are the best in this task. I said maybe they are the best on theory but not and never in practice. Specially when it involve skills needed in the running machine, repairing and setting networks, assembling machine belt and more.

The DepEd Secretary response to the call from business group positively except that the smallest estimate of budget for this program is not less than P30 billion. Well i said looking for funds is no longer job of the people in the academe. How about you? Any suggestion?

To attain quality education, reduce the topics or subject matter per school year and more exercises which should be relevant to actual situation in the present industry.

Reduce the teachers load specially the paper works. The government should produce (congress) approved lesson plan and text books. Do not allow teachers to handle subject not their specialization unless they have special training. Increase our salary for God Sake.
